Video in French only, for visuals. Key information is in the text of this post.

The second smallest Faraday cage

The smallest mobile Faraday cage is the full shielding suit with helmet, but it only allows drinking through a straw and eating small bites held in the hand, which is not practical for a full meal with a plate, spoon, fork, knife, and a drinking glass.

With a helmet, you can drink with a straw.

Solving the problem of eating while staying mobile.

To meet the need for mobility, I created this new model of Faraday cage. It will be useful at parties where you want to stand and talk with several people while eating or drinking something. It will also be great for events like festivals, exhibitions, etc., while also offering the bonus of sun protection. This model lets you place a tray with a plate on your lap or hold it in your hands, or simply eat something held in your hands.

An example of a tray for eating. The edge is useful to reduce the risk of accidents. In the video, the tray shown has no edge, so it’s more likely that something could slip and fall. But we use what we have and do our best.

View from the inside. It’s important to stay upright and be careful not to lean forward if the food is on the plate.

The fabric falls into the plate if you lean forward. Be careful! Have something to clean and wipe in case of accidents. Ideally, a laptop-shaped tray would probably work best. I will try to find something like that and share it here once I do.

Attention:

Plan to have something to wipe your hands inside before touching the fabric, and a solution to clean up any accidental mess. It is wise to bring an anti-radiation sweater in case you want to pull up the elastic to free your hands and arms outside the Faraday cage. Shielding pants are necessary. They can be made from the same fabric as the Faraday cage. Remember the fabric is conductive. Be cautious with electricity.

Additional advantages

  1. As soon as you have a reason not to wear a helmet (pain, head injury, discomfort, hairstyle, etc.), this system allows you to have nothing on your head.

  2. In case of great heat, this system will be cooler, air will circulate better, and you can wear a lighter garment underneath. You’ll only have to keep the pants, which can be made of the same fabric. A skirt of the same fabric reaching the floor can also be worn but only if you are sure there are no waves coming from the floor. For example, the risk is high on an upper floor but almost none on a concrete slab on the ground or when walking outside.

  3. In case of extreme cold, you can wear a thick big hat without problem, which is difficult but not impossible with a helmet, depending on the model.

  4. The smaller and cheaper the Faraday cage, the lighter it is and the easier it is to transport.

  5. Even though the primary goal is protection to avoid unpleasant symptoms and health damage, this equipment has the side effect of making electrosensitivity visible to onlookers and spreading awareness virally through witnesses telling others about their conversations with you and/or showing photos and videos they took. (Please be courteous!) Being visible to the public is the first step to making change happen. Remember how long it took from when the first people complained about cigarette smoke to when laws changed. Do you want to wait as long to live in a guaranteed, protected electro-safe world? Without visibility, it could take a very long time.

Size

You will need to measure according to your own size the width you really need to successfully fit a tray under the fabric. You will have to simulate and take measurements accordingly. Also measure when you lean forward so that the back fabric is long enough not to pull on the elastic.

Making it

Ideally, make a pattern, guides to cut the fabric well to avoid mistakes. You can find an old fabric to throw away or use large sheets of paper to create cutting guides. Don’t forget you need hems for sewing. Double stitching is preferable for waterproofing. If you are alone, you can use a wig head which is also very useful for making or simply storing a helmet. Otherwise, you can ask someone your size to wear the structure while you take measurements. The fabric in front of the face must be taut and the extra fabric should fold on the sides. This will improve vision.

Adamantan003 could offer better durability and vision compared to silver, which should provide better attenuation performance but shorter lifespan. It’s up to you to choose your priorities according to your own criteria. Personally, as you can see, I choose attenuation performance for my EHS comfort but I admit poor vision annoys me a lot. Nothing is perfect — we live in a world of compromises to make and choices to take.

Putting off a project? Beware!

Please note that supplies I find on Aliexpress can disappear from the market at any time. Links may change without notice and stock can run out without replenishment. I have no control over this. I don’t make money from product sales either. I only share my experience and the rest is up to you. If you are interested in a project, I recommend getting the materials quickly.

Buy when available

For example, the first silver garments I bought in 2020 are no longer available on Aliexpress. They now offer a less interesting version, so it’s preferable to buy fabric and make the garment yourself. Regarding my two-person Faraday cage, the structure disappeared from the market for a while then reappeared. If you are interested, think about it before it disappears again. Same for the structure I show in this publication. You’ll find the link in my personal Aliexpress article list.

Not used to Aliexpress?

You need to open an account first. Then make sure you are logged in. After that, you can save product links in your account, either in the cart or favorites.

Don’t like Aliexpress?

Maybe you’ll find elsewhere but I don’t know other sellers or suppliers. I buy almost everything on Aliexpress and some on Safe Living Technologies. I’m in Quebec and Europe has shops and suppliers we don’t have in North America and vice versa. If you know equivalent products and suppliers, please share them in the comments for everyone’s benefit.

List of necessary and recommended materials

  1. Nickel-silver fabric or equivalent: 1 meter

  2. Silver mosquito net fabric or Adamantan: 2 x 1.5 meters

  3. The black structure worn like a backpack (Note: rare on the market!)

  4. Elastic for the waist. Optional: soft ribbon to add to the edge.

  5. The identifications. "No Wi-Fi" logos exist as-is, but otherwise, you need to place a custom order. You write a private message to the seller and send them an image of the logo you want, and they will tell you the price for making it. I recommend machine-made logos rather than handmade ones to give a more “official” look and therefore be more respected.

  6. Small clips that won’t damage the fabric to hold it in place on the structure. I used wooden clips.

  7. Thread and a sewing machine if you're doing the project yourself.

  8. A wig head on a stand if you're doing the project alone.

Doing the project?

Please share your news with me! I’m happy to learn that my sharing is useful to someone. You can inform me in comments or by email. Thank you!
